Seyi Tinubu
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has faulted attacks on the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu, over his rumoured governorship ambition in Lagos State.
Mr Bwala said that although Seyi has not publicly declared interest in the race, there is no law barring him from seeking the state’s top seat.
Speaking on The Clarity Zone Podcast, the presidential aide argued that Seyi’s father’s position should not disqualify him from contesting for public office, noting that he could even challenge his father in the 2027 presidential election if he wished.
According to him, assumptions that Seyi’s charitable activities are tied to political ambition are misplaced.
“I have known the children of presidents in Nigeria. He [Seyi] is unassuming. Check his childhood friends and the people he grew up with. He has not changed his community or friends because of greatness, so to speak,” Mr Bwala said.
“For political reasons, some people assume that the way he is doing a lot of welfare, which he did not start yesterday, means he wants to become governor. I asked: ‘Is he not qualified to be a governor?’ They said: ‘no, because his father is a president’.
“He has not said he is running, but I’m just saying you don’t gaslight or blackmail someone. Even if his father is president, what stops him from running as governor? He can even challenge his father in a presidential election.”
