A ghastly motor accident at New Garage, inward Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has claimed the life of one male passenger while nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued on Saturday by its Public Education Officer, Route Commander Oluwadamilola Jayeola.
According to the FRSC, the crash occurred around 6:55am and involved a white Iveco truck with registration number MEK 34 XC and a Toyota commercial bus marked ENU 814 XJ.
“Tragically, one male passenger lost his life, while nine others — eight males and one female — sustained varying degrees of injury. No passenger escaped unhurt,” Jayeola said.
The rescue team reportedly moved swiftly to the scene, evacuating the injured to the Emergency Centre in Ojota and Gbagada General Hospital, while the corpse of the deceased was deposited at Real Divine Hospital Mortuary, Ibafo.
She added that the vehicles had been taken into custody by the Motor Traffic Division of the Ojodu Abiodun Police Station as investigations continued.
Preliminary findings by the corps linked the accident to speeding and road obstruction, a recurring cause of deaths along the busy highway.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, commiserated with the bereaved family and prayed for the speedy recovery of the victims.
He cautioned motorists against overspeeding, especially during the ember months notorious for road carnage.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Nigeria’s busiest inter-state highway, has remained a death trap despite repeated warnings by road safety authorities.
The 127.6km corridor has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent months.
In August, at least six persons were killed in one crash, while another incident saw 19 passengers narrowly escape death.
Despite promises of safer highways, poor driving habits, speeding, and bad road conditions continue to make the expressway one of the deadliest in the country.
