The Suspects
The Police Command in Rivers has arrested three individuals suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of Mr. Humprhrey Wagbara.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, informed reporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that Wagbara was rescued during a coordinated operation at the kidnappers’ hideout.
She indicated that officers were dispatched for the operation after a distress call was received regarding the syndicate’s activities.
“Upon receiving the distress call, officers executed a coordinated operation on September 19, which resulted in the arrest of three suspects,” she said.
The suspects were apprehended at various locations in the Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre Local Government Areas. Iringe-Koko stated that the suspects confessed to the kidnapping of Wagbara and acknowledged their involvement in several other kidnappings in the state.
“They admitted to the abduction of Mr. Onwuli Jude and Mr. Nwabueze Nchekwube along School Road, Igwuruta-Atali, and revealed that they demanded a ransom of N6 million from Nchekwube’s family before killing him,” she disclosed.
The police spokesperson also connected the syndicate to the kidnapping of Mrs. Mercy Chinyere on September 12 at Igwuruta-Atali, alleging that they collected N3.5 million in ransom before her release.
Items recovered from the suspects included a G-3 rifle with a breech number of 10398, a magazine, and an Itel android phone that allegedly belonged to Wagbara.
Other items found were three short daggers, a jackknife, and a stainless short knife.
Iringe-Koko noted that the suspects and the recovered items are currently in custody while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other gang members and recover additional weapons.
She also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the courage of the officers involved in the rescue operation.
According to her, the CP stated that the results of the operation demonstrate the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the state. Iringe-Koko urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station for prompt action.
