The Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, retired, has sworn in all the newly elected chairmen of the 23 local government areas in the state
Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Ibas charged the chairmen not to betray the people’s trust, but to repay the honour bestowed upon them with accountability, humility, and a commitment to the welfare of their people.
Rivers State Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, retired, presiding over the swearing-in of the newly elected chairmen of the 23 local government areas of the state.
The ceremony, which comes two days after the Saturday, 30th August council polls, also comes a few hours after the Michael Odey-led Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, presented certificates of return to the elected chairmen.
RSIEC had on Sunday declared the chairmanship candidates of the All Progressives Congress winners of the election in 20 out of the 23 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party won in three local government areas, Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni.
With the state of emergency set to be lifted, the local government election is one of the last hurdles to be cleared before the return of democratic governance to Rivers State.
Vice Admiral Ibas wants the chairmen to see the privilege given to them as a call to selfless service.
He wants them to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and service delivery, warning that the state cannot afford to return to what he refers to as the ‘recent dark days.’
And as the countdown to the return of democratic rule in Rivers State begins, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, retired, is calling on the people to have faith in God and in one another, and unite to build a state where governance works, peace endures, and democracy thrives.
