The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has defended the borrowing policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing it as strategic and aimed at funding critical infrastructure and productive sectors of the economy.
APC spokesman, Mr. Seye Oladejo, stated this in a release on Thursday titled “Peter Obi’s Borrowing Hypocrisy: Physician, Heal Thyself.”
He criticised the 2023 Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, for recently calling on accountants to confront the Federal Government over what he termed “reckless borrowings.”
Oladejo argued that Obi lacked the moral standing to attack Tinubu’s borrowing, adding that the former Anambra State governor should “play to his strengths in politics, as topics bordering on finance, economy, development, and social policy remain his enduring handicap.”
He explained that borrowing under Tinubu’s leadership was deliberate, targeted at infrastructure, energy, transportation, and other productive sectors.
“First, borrowing is not inherently reckless. What matters is purpose and prudence. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, borrowing is strategic, tied to critical infrastructure, energy, transportation, and productive sectors. This is the globally accepted practice even the most advanced economies borrow to fund growth,” Oladejo said.
The APC spokesman added that Obi’s track record did not reflect prudence as he claimed.
“Second, Peter Obi has no moral authority to lecture anyone about prudence. Nigerians remember that as governor, he left behind unpaid pensions, collapsing infrastructure, and poor human capital indices,” he said.
Oladejo further accused Obi of extravagance, pointing out what he described as contradictions in his political style.
“For someone who flew around the world in private jets during his campaign while sermonising about cutting costs, the contradictions are glaring,” he said.
He stressed that unlike Obi’s “motivational-speech politics,” Tinubu was taking bold, necessary steps to reposition Nigeria’s economy.
“Subsidy removal, currency reforms, and targeted borrowing are difficult but inevitable measures to secure Nigeria’s future. This is leadership in action not empty moralising,” Oladejo added.
He urged Obi to stay away from sensitive discussions on governance and finance.
“Obi is out of depth and out of place. Tinubu is building Nigeria’s future, while Obi is busy building sound bites. One is a reformer, the other a motivational speaker. Nigerians know the difference,” Oladejo said.
