Omoyele Sowore
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by police operatives at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore was reportedly picked up shortly after leaving the court on Thursday, October 23. Sources say the arrest was ordered by the FCT Commissioner of Police.
The activist had arrived at the court for a hearing before Justice Emeka Nwite over what he described as a “bogus and farcical” forgery charge involving a police wireless message — a case he said was filed under the direction of the “illegal Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.”
However, proceedings didn’t hold as the judge was unavailable. As Sowore prepared to leave, a police officer approached him and announced his arrest on the orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police.
His legal team, led by Tope Temokun, immediately confronted the officers, demanding an explanation. The police, however, insisted they were acting on “direct instruction” and whisked him away in a waiting vehicle.
Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has been a consistent critic of government corruption and abuse of power. He has faced multiple arrests and trials since 2019 for his activism and calls for democratic reforms.
