President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking a new phase in Nigeria’s electoral leadership.
The brief but significant ceremony took place at about 1:50 p.m. inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with top government officials and cabinet members in attendance.
President Tinubu, while administering the oath of office, charged Prof. Amupitan to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthen the institutional capacity of the nation’s electoral body.
“You must protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that INEC remains an independent and credible institution,” Tinubu told the new chairman.
Prof. Amupitan’s inauguration follows his confirmation by the Senate on October 16, after what lawmakers described as a rigorous and transparent screening exercise.
The new INEC boss, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and respected constitutional law expert, is expected to lead the commission through critical electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers say Amupitan’s appointment reflects Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning INEC for credibility, transparency, and efficiency in election management.
