The African Union has demanded the “immediate and unconditional” release of Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Embaló following a military takeover that suspended the election, imposed a curfew, and temporarily closed borders.

AU Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf condemned the coup and called for the release of all detained officials.
