The Federal High Court in Abuja has once again restrained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Justice Peter Lifu issued the fresh order on Tuesday after considering an application filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido. The court held that the convention cannot go ahead until the substantive suit before it is fully heard and determined.
In addition, Justice Lifu directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to supervise or recognise any action or outcome arising from the proposed convention pending the conclusion of the case.
The judge ruled that Lamido’s application had merit, noting that allowing the PDP to proceed with the exercise could cause irreversible harm to the applicant’s rights as a party member. Lamido, in his suit, argued that the PDP violated its constitution by fixing the convention without proper internal procedures and adequate notice, thereby undermining his right to fairly contest for the position of national chairman.
This is the second time the court is intervening in the matter. On October 31, Justice James Omotosho had issued a similar order stopping the PDP from conducting the same convention.
The latest ruling further deepens the party’s internal leadership crisis, hampering ongoing efforts to reorganize ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The matter has been adjourned for hearing of the substantive suit later today.
