The Federal Government has announced a total ban on open grazing in Nigeria.
This decision is part of a new plan to end the long-standing fights between farmers and herders.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Mukhtar Maiha, made the announcement on Tuesday during the first National Council on Livestock Development meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.
According to the Minister, open grazing has caused many deaths, destroyed farmlands, and forced families to leave their homes. He said the suffering caused by these clashes must stop.
Maiha explained that open grazing is now treated as a serious crime. He advised herders to move fully into ranching, saying ranching is safer and will also help them make better profit because their cattle will grow healthier.
He also noted that the livestock sector has huge economic benefits. The government is targeting about $74 billion in revenue within five years, and over $14 billion has already been generated through current programmes.
Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaleptawa Farauta, who declared the meeting open, said the state is one of Nigeria’s strongest livestock areas, making it a good place to host the event.
The new National Council on Livestock Development includes livestock directors from all 36 states and the FCT. The council will help drive reforms and modernize Nigeria’s livestock industry.
