The Lagos State Police Command has officially confirmed that Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a former governorship candidate in Ondo State, was murdered, with a suspicious ₦50 million transfer from his account now a central focus of the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh, disclosed this development to Channels Television, stating that the conclusive autopsy report has propelled the case forward.
“The autopsy conducted on September 11 and other recent findings led to the arrest and re-detention of seven of the fourteen Akingboye family members earlier questioned,” CP Jimoh stated.
The politician’s death on September 3 was initially shrouded in mystery, with family members claiming his body was found in the backyard of his Lagos home. The case took a serious turn when his first son, Samuel Akingboye, who resides in Ondo State, formally reported the incident and demanded a full-scale investigation.
Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, had previously arrested and interrogated nine relatives and aides. The investigation zeroed in on a significant financial transaction—a transfer of ₦50 million from the deceased’s account, which was allegedly shared by some immediate family members.
With the autopsy and toxicology results now completed, the police are awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to proceed with formal charges.
“With the toxicology results completed, we await the DPP’s advice so prosecution can begin against anyone found culpable,” CP Jimoh affirmed, reiterating the Command’s commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
