Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has sparked a wave of empathy across social media after revealing that he still experiences sickle cell crises despite decades of treatment.
The 38-year-old singer made the disclosure in a newly shared interview clip, where he spoke openly about living with the condition since childhood.
Gold said the pain episodes never fully stopped, describing sickle cell crisis as “crazy pains in the joints, legs, and sometimes the stomach.” He recalled being placed on lifelong medication as early as age five and depending on folic acid and B-complex “till now.”
The hitmaker used the moment to urge Nigerians to take genotype testing seriously, stressing that “SS + SS should not bring more children into the world to suffer.” He lamented that awareness remains low despite Nigeria having one of the highest burdens of the disorder globally.
He also recounted the night he first learned about his diagnosis, when his mother carried him on her back to a hospital miles away because of severe pain.
“That was when the doctor told me I’d live with this for the rest of my life,” he said.
While noting that the crises are less severe now due to better self-care and resources, Gold admitted they still occur occasionally.
As a survivor, Adekunle Gold through his NGO, has reached many others living with the condition, providing medical support and pushing to protect future generations from preventable suffering.
