LAHA Speaker, Obasanjo
A group of stakeholders under the Lagos Resilient Group (LSG) have raised serious concerns over what it described as a deliberate takeover of the Agege Local Government leadership, warning that public office is being treated as a family estate.
The concern followed the resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” as Executive Chairman, and the rapid swearing-in of Vice Chairman Hon. Vinod Ganiyu Obasa as substantive Chairman within 24 hours.
LSG in a statement signed by Oguntimirin Lekan, Secretary, LSG said the resignation was not voluntary, but part of a planned political succession.
The group explained the move was a carefully executed political script designed to benefit a predetermined successor.
The statement said, “Today, we are witnessing the consequence of that authoritarian imposition. The chairman has resigned, not out of self-determination but out of a political trap long set to pave the way for an already predetermined successor, thereby turning public office and democratic representation into a private family estate. We are reliably informed that Hon. Tunde Azeez has been back in Agege for months, yet he could not resume because he was compelled under political duress to pave way for this succession, a calculated political script now shamelessly executed.”
The group described the act as a serious affront to democracy, warning that it reveals entrenched political influence extending beyond Agege to other Lagos local governments.
“This act is not just a slap on the people of Agege; it is a desecration of democracy. It reveals a deeper rot where a serving Speaker has positioned himself as a semi-god in Lagos politics, deciding who emerges, who rules, who eats, and who is silenced.
“The influence of Rt. Hon. Obasa is now visibly entrenched far beyond Agege extending into Alimosho, Ojokoro, Somolu, and other LGAs where party structures are increasingly manipulated to enthrone loyalty to an individual rather than loyalty to the party or service to the people.”
LSG further expressed concern that national leadership may be unaware or indifferent to the situation, drawing parallels with previous legislative crises under the same Speaker.
They stated, “We are disturbed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Leader under whom the progressive family was built, appears to be either uninformed, indifferent, or being shielded from the reality of this ongoing abuse of power, just as silence accompanied the legislative crisis that rocked the state assembly under the same Speaker. The question we must now ask is simple: Shall Lagos be allowed to fall into the control of political feudal lords?”
The group condemned the imposition of leadership without grassroots consultation and the silencing of loyal party members.
“The imposition of leadership without consultation with grassroots members; the continued silencing and humiliation of committed party loyalists in Agege; the abnormal and suspiciously rushed transition carried out in less than 24 hours; [and] the gradual conversion of public leadership positions into hereditary privileges.”
LSG therefore called on national and state leaders to intervene and restore democratic integrity to Agege.
“Lagos belongs to all of us, not to a dynasty. Democracy must not be reduced to inheritance. Power must return to the people.”
