Days after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action in Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday hosted the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Presidency released photographs of the closed-door meeting but offered no official statement on its purpose. The encounter comes amid heightened tension following Trump’s recent remarks accusing the Nigerian government of allowing widespread persecution of Christians.
Last Friday, the U.S. President declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” and warned that military measures could follow if the alleged religious violence was not curbed.
While President Tinubu has repeatedly maintained that religious persecution has no place in Nigeria, Washington has continued to express skepticism over the government’s handling of sectarian violence.
The meeting with Archbishop Kaigama is seen as part of Tinubu’s efforts to engage faith leaders and douse international concerns over the country’s human rights and religious freedom record.
