Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended a 24-year-old woman, Halimat Jubril, after she was found in possession of a fabricated Barretta pistol on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The arrest occurred during a routine patrol by a police tactical team along the ECOWAS corridor in Badagry.
According to police reports, Halimat was unable to provide a convincing reason for carrying the firearm and denied any involvement in armed robbery. However, authorities suspect that she, along with other individuals still at large, conspired illegally to possess the weapon.
Halimat was immediately taken into custody at the Lagos State Command, where she was interrogated. Subsequent investigations revealed sufficient evidence to charge her with conspiracy and unlawful possession of a firearm, offences punishable by several years in prison under Lagos State laws.
The charges, filed before the Ogba Magistrate Court, state that on September 20, 2025, Halimat and others conspired to commit a felony by unlawfully possessing a fabricated Barretta pistol on the ECOWAS highway in the Lagos Magisterial District. The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Phillip Ademigbuji, sought a referral to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal counsel, leading the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, to remand Halimat in custody pending the DPP’s advice.
The court has adjourned the case to await the DPP’s report, which will determine whether the case continues at the Magistrate Court or is escalated to the High Court for jurisdiction.
This arrest underscores ongoing police efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in Lagos and disrupt criminal activities associated with fabricated weapons.
