The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Force clarified that there was no court order restraining it from enforcing existing laws on tinted vehicle glass. However, enforcement was earlier suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
According to the police, recent intelligence and crime trends indicate a surge in criminal activities carried out using vehicles with illegally tinted windows. These vehicles, the Force noted, have been exploited by criminal elements to conceal identities and facilitate crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences.
“In view of these developments, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit as a proactive measure to safeguard lives and property,” the statement said.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted with professionalism, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to the law. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law while working with stakeholders to enhance national security.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with all legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
