A tragic road accident on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, on Tuesday claimed the lives of an eight-month-old baby girl and an adult female passenger, while ten others sustained serious injuries.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the fatal collision occurred opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro.
According to preliminary investigations, a red Tata commercial bus travelling from Palmgroove toward Anthony at excessive speed reportedly lost control, veered off its lane, broke through the median barrier and rammed into an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus heading toward Palmgroove.
The impact killed an adult female passenger instantly, while the infant later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
LASTMA operatives, assisted by members of the public, immediately launched a rescue operation, successfully extricating ten injured victims, including both drivers. Six passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen bus, while four others were evacuated from the Tata bus, all suffering varying degrees of injuries.
To prevent further accidents, LASTMA officials secured the scene and promptly cleared the wrecked vehicles from the expressway, restoring traffic flow along Ikorodu Road.
The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention, while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the remains of the deceased. Security personnel from the Ilupeju Police Division provided security throughout the operation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, particularly the mother of the deceased infant, who was also injured and is currently receiving treatment.
Bakare-Oki described the crash as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving, urging motorists—especially commercial drivers—to adhere strictly to speed limits and ensure regular vehicle roadworthiness checks, particularly of braking systems.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives through proactive traffic management, rapid emergency response and sustained public awareness campaigns, while calling on all road users to prioritize safety at all times.
