No fewer than seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have been confirmed dead, while four others sustained injuries in a lone fatal road accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State.
The vehicle, which belongs to the NUJ, Gombe State Council, was involved in the crash along the Gombe–Yola highway on Saturday, SaharaReporters has gathered.
A photograph obtained by SaharaReporters shows the NUJ vehicle badly mangled, underscoring the severity of the accident.
SaharaReporters gathered the journalists were travelling from Gombe State to Yola, Adamawa State, when the incident occurred shortly after their departure from Gombe.
It was further learnt that the victims were part of a delegation returning from a wedding ceremony held in Gombe South Senatorial District.
The journalists had attended the wedding of a colleague, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), before embarking on the journey.
Four other journalists reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause of the crash remain unclear, while authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
The incident has thrown the media community in Gombe State into mourning, with colleagues describing the development as a devastating loss to the profession.
