Seyi Tinubu has stepped further into the spotlight of Yoruba tradition, as the son of President Bola Tinubu was formally installed with a chieftaincy title in Lagos.
The installation marks his recognition within the traditional institution, reflecting the continued relevance of chieftaincy titles in Yoruba culture and their role in honouring individuals within the community.
At a ceremony held in Lagos, Seyi Tinubu was installed as the Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun, while his wife, Layal Tinubu, received a complementary title. The event blended pageantry with heritage, reinforcing the growing public profile of the couple within traditional institutions.
Reacting to the honour, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the installation as recognition earned through values rather than privilege.
“I warmly congratulate Barrister Oluwaseyi Tinubu on his installation as the Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun. This honour reflects service, character, and commitment to our culture and people,” the governor said.
He further wished Tinubu “continued strength and clarity” as he embraces the responsibilities tied to the title.
The Lagos installation follows closely on the heels of an even broader cultural moment. Barely five days earlier, Seyi and Layal Tinubu were honoured in Oyo by the Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during a grand ceremony at the royal palace.
The couple were installed as Okanlomo of Yorubaland and Yeye Okanlomo of Yorubaland, respectively.
That Oyo event drew an array of prominent figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, governors, ministers, and traditional rulers from Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, underscoring the weight of the title within Yoruba society.
The designation Okanlomo of Yorubaland, often interpreted as “the beloved child of the people,” carries symbolic responsibility as a custodian of Yoruba unity, values, and heritage. During the conferment, the Alaafin praised Seyi Tinubu as a young leader devoted to youth empowerment and social development.
Accepting the honour, Tinubu struck a note of humility and purpose, saying, “I accept this title with humility and a deep sense of responsibility to serve our people and promote peace and progress across Yorubaland.”
With consecutive chieftaincy honours from two influential cultural centres, the Tinubus’ rising profile within Nigeria’s traditional landscape signals a renewed emphasis on youth involvement and cultural preservation, themes that continue to resonate beyond palace walls and into public discourse.
