President Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to all state governors across the country to immediately implement full local government autonomy in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling, stressing that failure to do so will attract legal consequences.
The President gave the directive during the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, but made it clear that the order applies to every governor in Nigeria, regardless of party affiliation.
“Local government autonomy is and must be effective,” President Tinubu declared. “There is no autonomy without following the mandate of giving them their money directly—that is complying with the Supreme Court.”
Tinubu’s warning follows continued delays by several state governments in enforcing the July 2024 Supreme Court judgment, which ordered that federal allocations be paid directly to the 774 local governments nationwide.
The apex court had ruled that governors no longer have the constitutional power to withhold, manage or divert funds meant for local councils, describing such actions as illegal and harmful to grassroots development.
Despite the clarity of the judgment, implementation has remained slow in many states, raising concerns over deliberate resistance by some governors. President Tinubu stressed that compliance is not optional and warned that any attempt to undermine the ruling could attract judicial sanctions.
The President emphasised that effective local government autonomy is critical to strengthening democracy at the grassroots, improving service delivery, and accelerating development in rural and urban communities.
He urged governors to respect the rule of law and align with the constitutional framework by allowing local councils full financial and administrative independence.
