Artificial intelligence has helped doctors detect more cases of breast cancer during routine screenings, according to a world-first randomised controlled trial published in The Lancet.
The Swedish study, involving over 100,000 women screened in 2021–2022, found that AI-assisted reading of mammograms detected 9% more cancers than standard screening and reduced dangerous interval cancers by 12%. False-positive rates were similar in both groups.
Researchers said AI could ease pressure on overstretched radiologists and improve early detection, but warned that rollout should be cautious and closely monitored.
