Six passengers have been confirmed dead, while four others were rescued after a passenger boat capsized along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos State.
The tragic incident, which occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, involved a Savvy Marine passenger boat that was en route from Ilashe Beach House before it ran into trouble on the busy waterway.
In a joint statement issued by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the agencies confirmed that emergency responders swiftly moved to the scene following reports of the accident.
According to the statement signed by Wuraola Alake, Head of Public Affairs at NIWA, and Omowunmi Yussuff, Head of Corporate Affairs at LASWA, four passengers were successfully rescued and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
“Sadly, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene, while search and rescue operations remain ongoing to account for all persons involved,” the statement read.
Preliminary findings, according to the agencies, suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the mishap.
LASWA and NIWA assured the public that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out, adding that further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
The agencies also expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, while reaffirming their commitment to improving safety and enforcing regulations across Lagos inland waterways.
