Activities across offices of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) are set to grind to a halt from Monday, January 19, 2026, following the declaration of an indefinite strike by workers under the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC).
The industrial action, which cuts across all cadres of staff, was announced after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to FCTA management, which the unions said elapsed without any meaningful response or engagement.
In a notice circulated to its members, JUAC directed workers in all FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils and parastatals within the Federal Capital Territory to withdraw their services indefinitely and stay away from their duty posts until further notice.
According to the unions, the strike became inevitable due to the persistent neglect of workers’ demands, which they said have been ignored for too long by the authorities.
JUAC listed several unresolved issues fueling the industrial action, including the non-payment of outstanding wage awards and long-overdue promotion arrears owed to workers across various departments. The unions also decried delays in promotion exercises and the continued retention of retired directors and permanent secretaries beyond their statutory retirement periods.
Another major grievance raised was the alleged failure of the authorities to remit pension deductions and National Housing Fund (NHF) contributions deducted from workers’ salaries. The unions described this development as a grave violation of workers’ rights and a serious threat to their future welfare.
The notice further highlighted concerns over poor working conditions in many offices, alleged intimidation of staff, and what JUAC described as a pattern of neglect regarding workers’ welfare, morale and career progression.
JUAC also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the outcome of the 2024 promotion examinations, noting that about 77.5 per cent of candidates reportedly failed the exercise. The unions described the result as unacceptable and demoralising for the workforce.
In the statement, JUAC urged all workers to fully comply with the strike directive and remain at home until their demands are addressed by the appropriate authorities. The notice was electronically signed by the JUAC Secretary.
With the strike set to commence on Monday, residents of the Federal Capital Territory are likely to experience disruptions in public services if the impasse remains unresolved.
