Late Nigerian Gospel Singer, Bunmi Akinnaanu (Omije Ojumi)
Fresh details have emerged surrounding the final moments of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, who passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos.
A close friend and colleague of the late singer, Lanre Alewilese, has shared a heartbreaking account of her last days, revealing the severity of her condition before her passing.
According to Alewilese, Omije Ojumi was unable to open her eyes or speak for several weeks leading up to her death, underscoring how critical her health had become.
Alewilese explained that he deliberately chose to keep details of her worsening health away from the public to protect fans from distress.
He said her condition was extremely painful to witness and that sharing updates would not have offered any hope.
Speaking in Yoruba, he said in part:
“In the final weeks before Omije Ojumi passed on, she could not open her eyes or speak for weeks. I intentionally kept her condition away from the public because there was no positive update. I didn’t want to worry people unnecessarily. It was heartbreaking to see her in that state.”
Months of Seeking Divine Healing
Before her death, the 46-year-old gospel singer reportedly spent several months seeking divine healing.
A video of her fervently praying and asking God for healing had earlier gone viral on social media, sparking widespread concern among fans and followers across the country.

Omije Ojumi was widely celebrated for her soulful gospel music, most notably her iconic song “Omije Ojumi,” which earned her a special place in the hearts of gospel music lovers.
Her songs inspired many, and her sudden death has left a noticeable void in Nigeria’s gospel music community.
Tributes Pour In
Since news of her passing broke, fans, colleagues, and fellow gospel artists have taken to social media to express their grief and pay tribute.
