A peaceful protest broke out on Friday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, as residents and concerned stakeholders took to the streets to oppose alleged plans to impose the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
The protesters marched through Awujale Palace Road, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards, before proceeding to the Ijebu Ode Local Government Secretariat to formally register their displeasure over the development.
According to eyewitnesses, the demonstrators insisted that the selection of the next Awujale must follow due process, tradition, and transparency, warning against any attempt to force or impose a candidate on the people of Ijebuland.
The protest comes days after the Ogun State Government announced the suspension of the Awujale selection process. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, the state government disclosed that the process was halted following a flood of petitions received from security agencies and other critical stakeholders.
The government stated that the decision was taken in the interest of peace, security, and stability in Ijebuland, pending proper review of all complaints and concerns surrounding the succession process.
Protesters, however, maintained that constant vigilance was necessary to prevent any backdoor arrangements, stressing that the traditional institution must be protected from political interference.
