The national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he will only align with any political coalition or party ahead of the 2027 general election if he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso made this known on Saturday while addressing his supporters in Kano, amid rising political consultations and speculations over his possible defection from the NNPP as political actors begin early positioning for the next general election.
According to the former Kano State governor, discussions are ongoing about possible mergers or alliances, but he stressed that any party seeking his participation must be ready to recognise his political weight and ambition.
“We are looking for a party, but they must agree to give me, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a presidential or vice-presidential ticket,” he said.
There have been reports that Kwankwaso is under pressure to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party believed to be emerging as a major platform for opposition realignment ahead of 2027.
The ADC is said to be attracting several high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, as well as former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, all of whom are reportedly considering a presidential run.
Kwankwaso has also been linked with possible talks with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with claims that the party is seeking his support to strengthen President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
However, his latest remarks appear to shut the door on any arrangement that would relegate him to a minor role, as he insists on being a principal contender in any political alliance.
Kwankwaso contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the NNPP and finished third, trailing behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
