Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has ignited a major social media storm after declaring that he is “bigger than” legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Wizkid made the explosive statement on Tuesday via his Instagram Story while firing back at Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, following days of heated exchanges over comparisons between the pop star and the late music icon.
In a string of now-deleted posts, Wizkid lashed out at Seun Kuti, asserting his dominance in the global music space and mocking the activist-musician over his age and relevance. The posts marked Wizkid’s first public response after remaining silent as the controversy brewed online.
The “Ojuelegba” singer also shared a viral video of a woman criticising Seun Kuti before escalating the exchange with direct messages aimed at the Afrobeat singer.
Seun Kuti quickly responded, urging Wizkid to “just be yourself,” while taunting him for deleting the posts and questioning his resolve to sustain the confrontation.
The feud traces back to January 10, when Seun Kuti went live on Instagram to warn Wizkid’s fans against referring to the singer as the “New Fela,” describing the comparison as disrespectful and ignorant.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. The shoes are too big to fill,” Kuti said during the livestream, insisting that Fela’s legacy could not be replicated.
What began as a debate over legacy soon expanded into a dispute over branding, with arguments over the nickname “Big Bird.” Seun Kuti accused Wizkid of adopting the name, while also revealing he recently earned $120,000 simply for being Fela’s son.
Kuti further dismissed claims that he was seeking attention from Wizkid, listing his recent international performances and insisting he did not need “clout” from a pop star.
Despite the bitter exchange, Wizkid has repeatedly cited Fela Anikulapo Kuti as his greatest musical influence and even has a tattoo in honour of the Afrobeat legend — a contrast that has left fans sharply divided across social media.
