Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has spoken candidly about motherhood, resilience, and personal growth, describing herself as the “President General of single mothers.”
The actress made the declaration while addressing guests at her annual New Year thanksgiving ceremony, where she reflected on her journey of raising two children as a single mother and watching them thrive.
“My daughter has succeeded, my son has succeeded, my life is better,” she said. “That is why I say I am the President General of single mothers.”
Iyabo Ojo also celebrated her new status as a grandmother, confidently describing herself as the “sexiest grandma ever.”
Speaking partly in pidgin English, the actress highlighted the transient nature of relationships and the importance of self-development.
“As a woman, na man go leave you, na man go marry you. As a man, na woman go leave you, na woman go marry you,” she said, stressing that while relationships may change, purpose and growth must remain constant.
Eventful Year for the Ojo Family
The comments come after a remarkable year for Iyabo Ojo’s family. In 2025, her daughter, Priscilla Ojo, married popular Tanzanian singer Juma Jux. The wedding ceremonies, which took place in both Nigeria and Tanzania, attracted widespread attention on social media.
The couple also welcomed a baby boy last year, officially making the Nollywood star a grandmother.
Reflecting on Early Motherhood Struggles
Iyabo Ojo used the occasion to reflect on the emotional and mental challenges she faced while raising children at a young age and building a career in the entertainment industry.
“When you are raising your children at a young age as I did, you will almost go mad,” she said. “It is not easy.”
She added that many of the blessings she now enjoys were once beyond her imagination.
According to her, she never believed she would one day own property in Lekki, one of Lagos’ most upscale areas.
Supporting Thousands Beyond Her Family
Beyond her immediate family, Iyabo Ojo highlighted her long-standing commitment to helping others, particularly in education.
“From the two children that I gave birth to, I trained more than 1,000 kids in school,” she revealed.
Career and Background
Iyabo Ojo, born Alice Iyabo Ogunro on December 21, 1977, in Lagos, is one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, with a career spanning over two decades and appearances in more than 150 films across different sectors of the Nigerian movie industry.
She is the youngest of three children and hails originally from Abeokuta, Ogun State. She attended National College, Gbagada, before earning a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Estate Management from Lagos State Polytechnic.
Her journey into acting began during her secondary school days in a drama group. She officially started her professional career in 1998 after registering with the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), with support from actress Bimbo Akintola.
Marriage and Personal Growth
Iyabo Ojo married a Lagos-based clearing agent in 1999 at the age of 21, a union that produced her two children, Felix Ojo and Priscilla Ajoke Ojo. She later divorced and has since attributed the breakdown of the marriage to marrying too young.
Over the years, the self-styled “Queen Mother” has become known not only for her acting career but also for her outspoken views on social issues and strong presence on social media.
