Nigerian Nurse Loses Job, Licence in Australia Over Sleeping on Night Shift
A Nigerian nurse working in Australia, Chimzuruoke Okembunachi, has had her nursing registration cancelled following findings of professional misconduct after she was repeatedly caught sleeping while on duty during night shifts.
According to disciplinary proceedings, the nurse was accused of abandoning her professional responsibilities by sleeping during working hours meant for patient care. Investigations revealed that the conduct occurred on multiple occasions, raising serious concerns about patient safety and professional standards.

Regulatory authorities found that her actions fell far below the expectations required of registered nurses, particularly in a healthcare system where vigilance and responsiveness are critical, especially during night shifts when staffing levels are often reduced.
Following a formal review, the nursing board concluded that her behaviour amounted to professional misconduct and subsequently ordered the cancellation of her registration, effectively barring her from practising nursing in Australia.

The case has sparked conversations within migrant and healthcare communities about workplace pressure, fatigue among healthcare workers, and the strict professional standards enforced by overseas regulatory bodies.
Authorities reiterated that while fatigue is a known challenge in healthcare, sleeping on duty places patients at risk and cannot be excused under professional codes of conduct.
