A major controversy erupted on Monday within Oyo State’s revered traditional institution following an awkward and highly publicised moment involving two foremost Yoruba monarchs.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was visibly snubbed by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Sen.) Abdulrashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, during the 2026 Inter-Faith Gathering held on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The event took place at the Secretariat Grand Space, located behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, and was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.
The tension filled the atmosphere when the Alaafin, in what appeared to be a respectful and customary gesture, extended his hand to greet the Olubadan. In a surprising turn, the Olubadan reportedly ignored the outstretched hand and instead exchanged pleasantries with Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, and other dignitaries.
The Olubadan was said to have calmly taken his seat afterwards, leaving the Alaafin momentarily stranded in full public view, an action that sparked murmurs among guests and quickly became the dominant talking point at the gathering.
As of the time of filing this report, neither palace has issued an official statement explaining the incident. However, the development has generated widespread reactions across Oyo State and beyond, with many observers expressing concern over its implications for unity among traditional institutions.
