The Ogun State Police Command has ordered a probe into a viral video showing controversial musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, in police custody.
According to reports, Portable’s arrest was reportedly triggered by a complaint filed by his baby mama, identified as Asabi.
The footage, which has been widely shared on social media, especially on X, shows the handcuffed singer at a detention facility in Ogun State, triggering public outrage and fresh concerns over police brutality and human rights violations.
Responding to the video, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that Portable is in police custody but stressed that the conduct displayed in the footage is unacceptable and contrary to established police standards and procedures.
Oluseyi said the police do not allow the filming or public display of suspects, noting that such actions compromise the safety of suspects and undermine the integrity of ongoing investigations.
“The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing … Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody,” Oluseyi posted on X on Sunday.
The police spokesman attached the link to a Guardian where he said, “We don’t condone videoing suspects. We don’t even put suspects’ faces out. No matter who the suspect is, nobody should be treated in such a manner.’
He said the Command has commenced an internal investigation into the incident and assured that any personnel found culpable would be sanctioned in line with the law.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” Oluseyi said.
