The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed concerns over the worsening crisis in Venezuela following reports of United States military action, warning that the escalation poses serious risks to regional stability and undermines international law.
In a statement delivered on his behalf by UN Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres said he was deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating with in the United States military action in the country, describing the development as a “dangerous precedent” with potentially far-reaching implications.
The UN chief stressed that, regardless of the political situation in Venezuela, all parties must respect international law, including the United Nations Charter.
He expressed grave concern that the rules governing the use of force may not have been respected.
“The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating with today’s United States military action in the country, which has potential worrying implications for the region.
“Independently of the situation in Venezuela, these developments constitute a dangerous precedent. The Secretary-General continues to emphasize the importance of full respect – by all – of international law, including the UN Charter. He’s deeply concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected.”
Guterres urged all Venezuelan actors to step back from confrontation and embrace inclusive dialogue anchored on respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Riley M. Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, defended aggressive action against the government of President Nicolás Maduro, accusing it of fueling narcotics trafficking and empowering America’s global rivals.
“Narco-traffickers like Nicolas Maduro took advantage, sending a constant stream of poison into our country, killing Americans and destroying communities,” Moore said, alleging that the Venezuelan government had given China, Russia, and Iran a strategic foothold in the Western Hemisphere.
“No more. This is America’s backyard and we’ll defend it. Do not test @POTUS’ resolve,” the congressman added.
