The United States government has issued an advisory urging all American citizens to avoid travelling to Niger Republic for any reason due to escalating security threats, including terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, political unrest, and limited access to medical services.
In a statement released, the US Department of State ordered non-emergency government employees and their family members to leave Niger Republic immediately, citing significant safety risks.
The advisory also noted that routine or emergency services for U.S. citizens outside the capital, Niamey, cannot be guaranteed, making travel outside the city extremely dangerous.
The US government highlighted that a state of emergency and movement restrictions are currently in effect in many regions across Niger.
Foreigners travelling outside Niamey, including US government personnel, must be accompanied by military escorts.
Authorities have also warned that areas under a state of emergency may be off-limits at short notice and are subject to change.
US government employees in Niger are required to: travel in armoured vehicles for all movements.
“Observe a mandatory curfew. Avoid restaurants and open-air markets.”
Citizens are advised to take similar precautions to reduce exposure to risk.
Meanwhile, terrorist groups have continued to target vulnerable individuals and U.S. interests, using kidnapping for ransom as a business model.
Recent attacks and kidnapping incidents have occurred in the following areas: Niamey, Malian border area (Tillabéri Region, Tri-Border Zone), Diffa Region (Lake Chad Basin), Northern Agadez, Southern border corridor along the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.
Authorities warned that terrorists and their supporters continue plotting kidnappings, and attacks could occur anywhere in the country.
Violent crime remains a major concern, including armed robbery and residential break-ins, which can occur at any time.
Meanwhile, demonstrations and protests, often sparked by political or economic grievances, can be unpredictable and may take place during holidays or large events.
The Nigerien government has reportedly limited or blocked large gatherings and increased security presence with checkpoints and roadblocks around protest sites.
