An American woman has sparked widespread online debate after accusing the United States government of misleading citizens about Africa, admitting she grew up believing the continent lacked modern infrastructure and that its people lived in huts.
The remarks were made in a viral TikTok video shared by Kenyan content creator @helioskenya, where the woman reacted to the ongoing African tour of American YouTuber and streamer Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed.
Expressing shock, she said watching IShowSpeed’s livestreams exposed her to modern African cities featuring cars, clean water, internet access, and a vibrant entertainment industry—realities that contradicted what she claimed she had been taught.
According to her, she previously believed Africa was a single country where everyone spoke the same way and had little exposure to music beyond Shakira’s Waka Waka. That perception changed after discovering contemporary African artistes such as Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido.
She alleged that Americans had been “brainwashed” into holding false narratives about Africa, adding that such misinformation shaped deeply flawed views of the continent and its people.
“Speed is really changing the game,” she said. “I didn’t know Africa was such a beautiful place. They have cars, water, Wi-Fi—everything. We were lied to. The music is amazing. I really thought Africa was just one country, and I low-key believed people lived in huts because that’s what we were taught.”
Her comments come amid IShowSpeed’s 28-day livestream project titled Speed Does Africa, which officially began on December 29, 2025. The tour will see the streamer visit 20 African countries, broadcasting his experiences live on YouTube and Twitch.
Countries on the tour itinerary include Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Rwanda, Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The project has drawn massive attention online, with many Africans praising the exposure it brings, while others debate the persistence of outdated stereotypes about the continent.
