The Nigerian government has issued a security advisory to its citizens residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following rising military tensions triggered by strikes involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja said it was closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, warning that the security environment across the region remains volatile and unpredictable.

The advisory comes amid growing fears of wider regional instability after military actions reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States against targets inside Iran, as well as retaliatory measures allegedly launched by Iran against locations in parts of the Gulf region.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry in the statement signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals overseas while supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace.

According to the ministry, the heightened tensions could pose significant risks to civilians, including foreign nationals, prompting Nigerian authorities to urge citizens abroad to adopt strict safety precautions.

The Ministry advised Nigerians currently living in or visiting Iran and affected Gulf countries to remain highly alert and aware of their surroundings at all times.

Citizens were specifically warned to avoid locations considered strategic or sensitive, including military bases, government facilities, and other potential flashpoints that could become targets amid escalating hostilities.

“Given the heightened state of tension and the potential for further escalations, Nigerians are advised to maintain constant vigilance and remain conscious of their environment,” Ebienfa stated.

The government stressed that unpredictable developments could occur as the situation evolves, making caution essential for personal safety.

As part of precautionary measures, the Ministry strongly encouraged Nigerians to limit non-essential travel within affected countries until the security situation becomes clearer and stabilises.

The Ministry also warned Nigerian citizens to stay away from large gatherings, protests, or public demonstrations, noting that such events could quickly become unsafe under current conditions.

It emphasised that reducing unnecessary movement could significantly lower exposure to potential security risks.

The advisory further instructed Nigerians to strictly comply with safety and security directives issued by local authorities in their host countries.

The Ministry highlighted cooperation with law enforcement agencies as critical to ensuring safety during periods of heightened tension.

“Citizens are strongly advised to comply with all directives issued by local authorities. Cooperation with local law enforcement remains paramount for personal safety,” the statement noted.

According to the Ministry, the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, alongside missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, has been directed to strengthen communication channels with Nigerian nationals and prepare to offer assistance where required.

The embassies are expected to facilitate emergency communication, provide guidance, and support Nigerians who may require consular services as the crisis unfolds.

The Ministry assured Nigerians that it would continue to assess developments in the Middle East and issue further updates when necessary.

It reiterated that protecting Nigerian citizens abroad remains a top priority for the Federal Government, adding that relevant agencies are coordinating closely to respond to any emerging risks.

The government called for restraint and urged stakeholders to return to negotiations in order to prevent further deterioration of regional and global security.

The Nigerian government warned that continued escalation could have far-reaching consequences not only for the Middle East but also for international peace and economic stability.
