House Of Representatives
The House of Representatives has announced it will reconvene for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) release of the 2027 general election timetable.
The lower chamber said the announcement carries major implications for Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral process. House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, explained the importance of the development.
He said the House highlighted the “constitutional and national significance” of INEC’s announcement, which sets February 20, 2027, as the date for presidential and National Assembly elections.
Members were informed through an internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office, underlining the urgency of the matter. Lawmakers are expected to prioritise attendance and focus on legislative issues arising from the timetable.
On the pace of proceedings, Rep. Rotimi stressed that the House intends to handle matters efficiently. He said, “All related business will be handled expeditiously,” adding that members have been urged to attend due to the importance of the discussions.
The session comes a day after INEC formally unveiled the full 2027 election schedule, which includes timelines for party primaries between July and September 2026 and the commencement of continuous voter registration in April 2026.
The House will also consider potential amendments to the Electoral Act in preparation for the 2027 polls, ensuring that legislative oversight complements INEC’s timetable.
Observers note that the February 17 session could set the tone for broader discussions on electoral reforms and Nigeria’s democratic process.
In recent years, emergency sittings have become a tool for the House to respond quickly to urgent national matters, particularly those with constitutional implications.
Lawmakers are expected to deliberate swiftly, reflecting concerns over the tight electoral calendar and the need for effective legislative scrutiny.
