Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled coordinated attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in parts of Borno and Yobe states, killing no fewer than 29 terrorists during fierce gun battles, military authorities said on Sunday.
Operation Hadin Kai, the counter-insurgency outfit leading the war against insurgents in the North-East, said the terrorists launched simultaneous assaults on military positions and communities but were repelled after intense exchanges of fire.
According to military sources, the attempted attacks occurred at forward operating bases and vulnerable communities across the two states, with troops responding swiftly based on actionable intelligence.
Fierce Gun Battles
Security sources disclosed that insurgents attempted to infiltrate defensive perimeters under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically in a bid to overrun the positions. However, soldiers mounted stiff resistance, supported by coordinated ground manoeuvres and superior firepower.
In the ensuing confrontations, 29 terrorists were neutralised, while several others reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.
Troops also recovered multiple weapons and ammunition from the scene, including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and improvised explosive device (IED) materials believed to have been intended for further attacks.
Recovered Weapons
Military officials said the recovery of arms and explosives would significantly degrade the operational capacity of the insurgents in the affected axis.
“The swift response of our troops frustrated their plans and prevented potential casualties among civilians,” a source involved in the operation said.
The military added that clearance operations were ongoing in surrounding bushes to track fleeing insurgents and dismantle suspected hideouts.
Sustained Offensive
Operation Hadin Kai has intensified offensive operations in recent months, targeting Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) enclaves across the Lake Chad region and the Sambisa forest axis.
Security analysts say the coordinated nature of the foiled attacks suggests attempts by insurgents to regain momentum amid sustained military pressure.
Residents in parts of Borno and Yobe have continued to express cautious optimism as troops maintain aggressive patrols and clearance missions aimed at restoring stability in the North-East.
Military authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining the offensive until insurgent groups are completely neutralised, urging residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies.
