Following the confirmed sighting, authorities announced that Ramadan 1447/2026 will commence on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, in line with Islamic tradition, which begins the month upon verified moon sighting.
An official statement released on Tuesday by Haramain al sharifain (AL), the two Holy Sanctuaries, that is, the sanctuary of the Ka’ba at Makkah and the sanctuary of al-Masjid al-Rasool, confirmed the development, urging Muslims across the Kingdom and around the world to prepare for the spiritual obligations of the sacred month, including fasting, increased prayers, charity, and reflection.
“The Crescent of Ramadan 1447/2026 has been sighted in Saudi Arabia! “Subsequently, Ramadan 1447/2026 begins tomorrow, 18th February 2026
“Taraweeh Prayers will begin in the Two Holy Mosques after Isha Prayers,” the announcement stated.
As part of preparations for the commencement of the holy month, Taraweeh prayers, special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan, will begin immediately after Isha prayers at the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah.
Ramadan holds profound spiritual significance in Islam, commemorating the period when the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
Observant Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs, while focusing on prayer, moral conduct, and acts of charity.
With the sighting confirmed in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites, many countries are expected to align their observance with the Kingdom’s declaration, although local moon sightings may determine the start date in other regions.
