A 31-year-old man, Esosa Eguakin, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting two women on separate train journeys between Hampshire and London, following an investigation by the British Transport Police (BTP).
Eguakin, of Courtelle Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault at an earlier hearing and was sentenced on Tuesday, February 10, at Guildford Crown Court, according to a statement published by BTP on February 23, 2026.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) on him. The order prohibits him from engaging in a number of activities, including sitting or standing next to or opposite any lone woman on public transport.
The court heard that the first incident occurred on August 21 last year, during the early morning rush hour.
At about 7:15am, Eguakin boarded a service travelling from Fratton to London Waterloo. While on the train, he intentionally sat behind a woman in her 30s and sexually assaulted her.
In a separate incident on October 6, shortly after 6am, Eguakin again targeted a female passenger on a service from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. During the assault, the victim confronted him. He claimed he was attempting to retrieve a phone he had dropped.
However, he reportedly refused to move away from her.
An off-duty police officer on the train intervened and escorted Eguakin off the service at Woking station. The officer detained him at the station until on-duty officers arrived and took him into custody.
A subsequent investigation led by BTP detectives resulted in Eguakin being formally charged with two counts of sexual assault
Reacting to the sentencing, BTP Detective Constable David Stewart described Eguakin’s conduct as “predatory” and traumatic for the victims.
“Eguakin’s behaviour was predatory and deeply distressing for both victims. No one should feel unsafe or be subjected to such violations as they travel,” Stewart said.
He commended the victims for their cooperation and praised the swift intervention of the off-duty officer.
“I want to thank the women involved for their courage in supporting our investigation, as well as the off-duty officer whose swift actions prevented further harm,” he said.
“This sentence, along with the SHPO, sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders and ensure they are held to account.”
Stewart also urged members of the public to report incidents of sexual misconduct on the rail network.
“If you experience or witness a sexual offence on a train or at a station, please report it to us by texting 61016. In an emergency, always call 999,” he said.
“We take every report seriously and will stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders like Eguakin to justice.”
British Transport Police reiterated its commitment to ensuring passenger safety across the rail network, stressing that sexual offences on public transport will be investigated thoroughly and prosecuted.
