The UN rights chief has called on Burkina Faso’s military government to reverse its plan to ban all political parties and respect civil liberties. Since seizing power in 2022, the junta has suspended party activities, restricted NGOs, and imposed stringent regulations on civil society.
Volker Turk urged the authorities to uphold freedom of association and expression, release arbitrarily detained individuals, and ensure accountability for human rights violations, warning that ongoing restrictions are sharply curtailing civic space.
