Governor Siminalayi Fubara has broken his silence on the political turmoil in Rivers State, declaring that his calm posture in the face of confrontation was a deliberate decision to preserve peace.
Speaking Friday night in Lagos while receiving the Man of the Year 2025 award from New Telegraph at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, the governor said his perceived weakness was strategic not accidental.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, Fubara admitted that many of his supporters have endured what he described as “special pain” for standing by him through the crisis.
“Today for me is a very special day, and also special for everyone who has believed in me. And I know for believing in me you have a share of special pain,” he said.
The Rivers governor explained that his non-aggressive approach amid the political turbulence rocking the state was intentional.
“I chose for a lot of reasons to be weak. Weak because I want peace. Weak because I need to also protect those things that are dear not just to me but to our dear nation,” he stated.
Fubara insisted that restraint should not be mistaken for incapacity, stressing that patience often yields results at the right time.
“Continue to believe in what you believe in. Weakness is a virtue. It pays at the right time,” he added.
The award was presented by veteran journalist and former Ogun State governor, Olusegun Osoba, alongside the Chairman of the Board of New Telegraph, Orji Uzor Kalu, and the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal.
Fubara’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers, with observers closely watching the unfolding dynamics ahead of future electoral contests.
