The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Lagos Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, has appeared before a special panel convened by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, Lagos Monitoring Team can authoritatively confirm.
The IGP panel was set up to investigate allegations of impunity and human rights abuses involving officers of the agency.
CSP Akerele has faced intense media scrutiny due to accusations of human rights violations, misconduct, and unconventional enforcement tactics attributed to the Lagos Task Force officers.
Sources confirmed to Lagos Monitoring Team that CSP Akerele was confronted with these allegations and provided his perspective during the inquiry.
“Yes, I can confirm that CSP Akerele has appeared before the IGP panel. He was presented with the allegations and explained his viewpoint,” a source stated.
“While the investigation is ongoing, he received a reprimand and was thoroughly warned to implement measures that would prevent Task Force officers from infringing on citizens’ rights.
“The mantra of IGP Disu is that ‘the people are the boss,’ and police officers must respect the rights of the public. Our enforcement activities must align with standard operating procedures and be conducted humanely,” the source added.
In direct response to the ongoing issues, CSP Akerele has been instructed to establish a Provost Department within the Task Force. This department will serve as a channel for residents to report cases against officers who fail to adhere to best practices.
Additionally, it has been reported that CSP Akerele is to work on equipping Task Force officers with body cameras. This initiative aims to ensure that officers comply with the law and accurately document their activities.
