A 38-year-old man has been accused of killing his 66-year-old mother with a baseball bat following a heated argument at her home in the United States.
The suspect, Hayward Jenkins, from Wisconsin, was arrested by police after allegedly attacking his mother, Cheryl Jenkins, during a dispute.
According to authorities, police were called to Cheryl Jenkins’ home last Tuesday at about 8 a.m. after her fiancé discovered her lying face down on the floor and alerted emergency services.
The fiancé reportedly told officers that Hayward Jenkins had spent the night in the guest room but was nowhere to be found when they discovered the victim.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Cheryl Jenkins unresponsive with a severe head injury. A wooden baseball bat stained with blood was reportedly found on top of her body, suggesting it had been used in the attack.
Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the apartment complex, which allegedly showed Hayward Jenkins leaving the premises and boarding a bus at about 6 a.m., hours before the body was discovered.
Authorities launched a search for the suspect and were able to track him down later that day.
According to reports, including one by WLBT, family members tipped off investigators about his possible location. Police eventually located and arrested him at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel around 12:30 p.m.
A criminal complaint filed in the case stated that the argument between the suspect and his mother was reportedly over silver coins.
During questioning, Hayward Jenkins allegedly told investigators that his mother pointed a pair of scissors at him during the dispute. He said he then grabbed the baseball bat in anger.
Although he claimed he did not intend to hit her, authorities say he admitted to striking her multiple times. He was also quoted in the complaint as telling police that he was “wrong for murdering my mother.”
Hayward Jenkins has since been charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide. His bond has been set at $300,000, and he remains in custody as the investigation continues.
