The Lagos State Government has clarified that there will be no movement restriction, punishment, or arrest of residents who fail to comply with the reintroduced environmental sanitation exercise scheduled to resume on April 25, 2026.
According to the government, the sanitation exercise is being reintroduced primarily to encourage residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, rather than to enforce compliance through strict penalties.
Officials explained that unlike previous sanitation programmes that restricted movement during certain hours, the renewed initiative will focus more on public awareness, voluntary participation, and community engagement.
The government also noted that enforcement agencies will not arrest or penalize residents who are unable to participate, emphasizing that the aim is to build a culture of environmental responsibility across the state.
Environmental sanitation exercises were previously suspended in the state years ago due to concerns about enforcement practices and the impact of movement restrictions on residents.
With the new approach, the says it hopes to promote a cleaner environment while maintaining the freedom of movement for people living and working across the state.
Residents are therefore encouraged to voluntarily clean their homes, streets, and drainage systems to help improve public health and sanitation conditions in the state.
