Social media influencer Peller, aka Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, is in hot water with the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) after visiting the Oba of Benin’s palace without permission on Friday, March 6.
The council described the visit as a “serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts of the Palace.”
Key Events and Protocol Breaches
Unauthorised Access: The BTC officially declared the visit a “serious breach of protocol” and a “desecration” of the palace’s sacred precincts, stating that Peller and his entourage gained entry without the required permission.
Cultural Mix-Ups: During the visit, Peller famously greeted a palace chief with the Yoruba salutation “Kabiyesi”, which was immediately corrected by palace officials. He also humorously asked if the palace could help “stop the rain from falling”.
As a result, the palace queen involved in the incident faces possible removal, while the chief implicated has been suspended indefinitely.
A staff member, Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigerian Police Force and charged with causing a breach of peace.
The BTC has demanded that Peller present himself for questioning and issue a written apology, warning of legal action if he fails to comply.
Peller had been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs, but hasn’t responded
