Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, has accused the United States of preparing for a ground attack while publicly signalling interest in diplomacy to resolve tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking on Sunday, Qalibaf said Washington was sending mixed signals, combining calls for dialogue with alleged military preparations.
“The enemy publicly sends messages of negotiation and dialogue while secretly planning a ground attack,” he said in a statement reported by the official IRNA news agency.
Qalibaf warned that Iran was ready to respond forcefully to any such move, urging national unity as tensions escalate.
“Our men are waiting for the arrival of the American soldiers on the ground to set them on fire and punish their regional allies once and for all,” he added, describing the situation as “a major global war” that has reached its “most critical” stage.
He also expressed confidence in Iran’s ability to retaliate against any aggression.
“We are certain that we can punish the United States, make it regret attacking Iran, and firmly secure our legitimate rights,” he said.
Meanwhile, reports in the United States suggest the Pentagon has been considering the possibility of a ground offensive.
According to the Washington Post, planning for such an operation has been ongoing “for weeks”.
However, uncertainty remains over whether US President Donald Trump would authorise such action, given his previous stance against deploying American troops in foreign conflicts.
Senior US officials have continued to dismiss the prospect of ground operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated on Friday that Washington could achieve its objectives through aerial strikes without deploying “boots on the ground.”
