CP Ahmed Sanusi, FCT Police Commissioner.
The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) CP Ahmed Sanusi has explained the rationale behind the installation of air conditioners in police detention cells, stating that the move is aimed at improving the welfare and dignity of suspects in custody.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Abuja, the police chief said the decision was part of broader efforts to align detention conditions with acceptable human rights standards and modern policing practices.
According to him, many police cells, particularly in the FCT, are often overcrowded and poorly ventilated, creating harsh conditions for suspects awaiting investigation or arraignment. He noted that the installation of air conditioning systems is intended to address these challenges, especially in periods of extreme heat.
He stressed that the initiative should not be misconstrued as providing luxury for suspects, but rather as a necessary step to ensure humane treatment. “Suspects in custody are still entitled to basic rights and should not be subjected to inhumane conditions,” he said.
The commissioner added that the improved environment would also enhance the health and safety of both detainees and police personnel working within such facilities, reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses and the spread of infections.
He further explained that the move is in line with ongoing police reforms focused on professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights. He noted that ensuring better detention conditions could also reduce tensions within cells and improve overall security.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among residents, with some praising the initiative as a progressive step towards humane policing, while others questioned the priority given Nigeria’s broader security and infrastructure challenges.
However, the police boss maintained that safeguarding the rights and welfare of individuals in custody remains a fundamental responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all suspects are treated with dignity, regardless of the allegations against them.
