There has been widespread outrage following reports of sexual harassment and assault involving several women during a controversial annual festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
According to multiple accounts, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, when groups of young men allegedly attacked women who were seen outdoors during the event. The festival, reportedly held annually in March, is said to include a controversial practice where women are expected to remain indoors.
Witnesses and videos circulating on social media show men chasing women on the streets, tearing their clothes and subjecting them to various forms of harassment. Some reports further allege that more serious sexual assaults may have occurred, although these claims are still under investigation.
The disturbing footage has sparked public condemnation, with many calling for an immediate ban on any cultural practices that endanger women and violate their rights.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed that authorities have begun taking action. He disclosed that some suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident.
Edafe added that a comprehensive statement would be released soon, as investigations continue to identify and apprehend all individuals involved.
The incident has reignited national conversations around cultural practices, gender-based violence, and the need for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women across communities.
