The Nigeria Police Force has arrested two political thugs during an overnight raid across multiple locations in Edo State, marking a significant effort to curb electoral violence ahead of the governorship election.
The arrests were disclosed in a press statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Saturday.
According to Adejobi, three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols and one locally made gun were recovered from the suspects.
The suspects have been identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from Ugbogbo quarters in Igara Akoko, Edo.
Adejobi explained that the operation was carried out after the police received a tip-off that certain individuals had been armed to incite violence and cause instability during the election.
Acting swiftly, police operatives apprehended Obanor, reportedly a leader of an armed group, at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m. and arrested Tajudeen later at Igara Akoko on the eve of the election.
Upon searching the suspects’ belongings, the police recovered three cut-to-size pistols from Obanor and a locally made gun from Tajudeen.
Adejobi emphasized that the arrests demonstrate the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to upholding law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process in Edo State.
“The police and other supporting security agencies will not tolerate any form of violence or disorderliness during the election,” he affirmed.
Both suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face legal prosecution.
Meanwhile, the police have reassured the public of their commitment to protecting lives and property and have encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via official helplines.
