The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the Tax Reform Bill currently before the National Assembly will protect low-income earners, eliminate multiple taxation, and facilitate the ease of doing business in the country.
This was disclosed during a press briefing in Osogbo at the National Orientation Agency (NOA) office by the NOA’s Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was represented by the Director of Report Coordination and Improvement, Olubukola Olorunfemi.
Olorunfemi explained that the bill, which consists of four separate pieces of legislation, aims to streamline taxation and improve administration.
He said, “The tax reform bills are four different bills that seek to bring everything about taxation and the administration of tax in Nigeria under four different pieces of legislation.
The bills are as follows: The Nigeria Tax Bill, The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and The Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
“The Nigeria Tax Bill basically amalgamates all the existing laws in which provisions for taxation were made. When passed, this bill will lead to the repeal of 11 laws that contain provisions on the imposition and collection of taxes.”
Olorunfemi further stressed the government’s commitment to tackling the problem of multiple taxation, ensuring that individuals and businesses are not taxed repeatedly for the same obligation.
“The government is working to stop different levels of authority from taxing people for the same thing. Those earning very little will pay little or no taxes, helping them manage their finances better,” he stated.
He highlighted the introduction of new digital systems aimed at simplifying tax payments, making them faster, more transparent, and accountable.
“New digital systems are being introduced to make tax payments easier, faster, and more accountable. Tax revenue will be used to improve essential public services like schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, ensuring citizens see the benefits of their contributions,” he added.
According to Olorunfemi, the reforms are designed to ease the financial burden on hardworking Nigerians while fostering fairness in tax contributions.
“These reforms aim to ease the burden on hardworking Nigerians while ensuring everyone contributes fairly,” he concluded.
